Surfing in Ecuador

Although Ecuador is not the country with the nicest beaches, the coast offers great conditions for beginners but mostly also for advanced surfers. Not only along the coast of the mainland, but also on the Galapagos islands, especially on the islands Isabela and San Cristobal surfers can find great waves. Ecuador has many small swells in its two main seasons. The best season is from January till May when weather is sunny and warm and from June till December when it is getting colder. Ecuador has the advantage of warmer water due to the Panama current. The most famous places for surfers apart from the Galapagos islands are Montañita, Canoa and in the northern province Esmeraldas Mompiche.

But apart from these places also other not so famous villages along the coast are good places for surfers with surf regularly in the 2 – 6 ft+ region during the offshore November to March surf season, makes Ecuador an ideal surf vacation location. Top Ecuador waves to look out for are Shark Bay, El Pelado and Ecuador’s longest wave, La Posada. The positive aspects about surfing in Ecuador are the calm winds the uncrowded beaches and the cheap prices. The disadvantages are the lack of heavy waves and the rainy winter season. Everywhere along the coast it is easy to find good surf schools and depending on the season you can also visit or participate in surf competitions as for example in Montañita.
