Although Ecuador unfortunately did not make it to the World cup in 2010 the official world cup anthem “Waka Waka” by Shakira can be heard everywhere and is displayed at all big squares around Quito. Since Quito is the most touristic big city in Ecuador, especially the new center the “Mariscal”, you can find people from almost all nations here and every day to the different games you can see all kinds of uniforms walking around cheering for their teams. At first the world cup started relatively boring with no impressive results until Germany won against Australia with 4:0. The Irish Pub “Finn McCool” in the Mariscal was crowded by mainly Germans and a few Australians on Sunday 13th. Luckily this Sunday the new national law for alcohol restriction when Sundays no alcohol can be sold was not through yet and the Germans could enjoy their traditional beer to the game.
As further the world cup goes, games are becoming more exciting, fans have warmed up and bars and cafes have organized small events to animate guest during the breaks. It can be seen that European teams are playing very bad in comparison to the last world cup in Germany and it slowly turns out to be the world cup for South America. Current favorites are of course Brazil but also Uruguay who has played very good in the last games. Although Africa is hosting the world cup except for Ghana almost no team has made it through, especially South Africa who won against France had no chance to get further. Let´s hope that games are getting more exciting and that the best team wins (from South America!)!
