Cuenca situated southerly from Quito in a height of 2450 up to 2600 Meters is one of the most beautiful places in Ecuador. Cuenca is the third biggest city of Ecuador and rich in colonial heritage. The historic centre of Cuenca was appointed to World Cultural Heritage of the UNESCO in 1999.
The heart of the Historic Center is the Plaza Abdon Calderon where the old very impressing La Catedral Vieja is situated.
Inside of the cathedral we could see the oldest organ of Ecuador which was although I am no real fan of churches very impressing. Anyway you can find a lot of churches surrounding very nice places which invite you to relax and just look at the scenery around. But most charming are the closely streets and uncountable manufactories. The manufactories are in the possession of families since centuries and are specialized in making beautiful handcraft, like artful ceramic and jewelry of silver and gold. Visiting the manufactory where they are producing the famous Panama hat was absolutely fantastic! We learned a lot about the history of the Panama hat which has its origins in Ecuador and not in Panama and saw how they produce it originally. Not for nothing Cuenca is called the center of handicrafts of Ecuador.
Visiting the flower market was awesome! It was a unique glory of colors and fragrances!
In order that you can imagine the beautiful town Cuenca I also set a link to a nice short movie about Cuenca!
